Students With Special Needs

The Big Walnut Local Schools provides a continuum of special education services and support to children ages 3 through 21 identified as disabled under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Special education services are provided in accordance with Ohio's Operating Standards for Ohio's Schools Serving Children with Disabilities.

ELIGIBILITY

Eligibility for special education services is a team decision based on a child's individual needs. The district follows a Response to Intervention (RTI) process, which focuses on providing high-quality interventions while carefully monitoring student progress. If your child is not making progress through RTI, you will be notified by the educational team. Additionally, if you suspect your child has a disability or if you feel s/he needs additional services or interventions, please follow these steps:

  • For preschool-age students, contact Heidi Koon at 740.965.7846
  • For school-aged students, schedule a conference with your child’s teacher with the intent of discussing intervention needs.
