Erin’s Law: Senate Bill 288

Ohio Senate Bill 288 (often referred to as Erin’s Law) updated health education requirements to include instruction on:

The law also includes requirements for parent/guardian notification and training for school personnel.

Big Walnut Local Schools provides developmentally appropriate instruction for students in grades K–6 focused on child sexual abuse prevention.

This instruction:

Occurs annually
Includes information on available counseling and resources for children who may have experienced sexual abuse

This instruction is provided by trained school staff as part of our district’s health and wellness programming.

Students in grades 7–12 receive developmentally appropriate instruction in dating violence prevention and sexual violence prevention.

This instruction is provided in Health class and includes:

Instruction is delivered by certified health educators using district-approved resources.

Under Ohio law, parents/guardians may review curriculum materials related to child sexual abuse prevention and sexual violence prevention.

To review materials:

Submit a written request to your child’s building principal.
The principal will provide access to review materials within 48 hours at the school.

Parents/guardians may request that a student be excused from Erin’s Law instruction by submitting a written request to the building principal.

If a student opts out:

Alternative lessons/activities may be provided
The student will not receive a disciplinary action, academic penalty, or other sanction for opting out
