COVID-19 Family Update - 3.30.2020

Dear Big Walnut Families,

Thank you for your patience today as many districts across the nation accessed Schoology in unprecedented numbers.  Their team is working diligently to continue to increase capacity as we all adjust to this new normal. When all else fails, have your child read, read, read.

Speaking of adjusting to a new norm, Governor DeWine announced today that school buildings will continue to be closed through May 1.  We are not surprised by this announcement, as the governor has suggested several times that this might occur.  We will continue to work together to make the best of this situation.

I know first-hand how difficult this can be on families. Today, on  the very first day of remote learning, I had one child who was following her schedule exactly and who loved doing the work, another child with whom I had to argue all morning to get him to do anything, and one in between.  Of course, all of this was happening while I was on Google Meet video conference calls. So when I say we understand the stress of this situation, we really do! Hang in there, and reach out if we can help in any way!

I meant to mention this next item in my update on Saturday, but missed it.  Governor DeWine closed all playgrounds (I think it was last week, but the days are running together right now!).  We have put caution tape at the entrance of our playgrounds as a reminder to stay off all playground equipment. We have left basketball hoops up for now, with the intent that a family can use them.  The courts are not open for large group pick-up games right now. I would really like to keep hoops available for a parent and child to shoot around or an individual to work on free throws; however, if we see large groups playing together, we will be forced to shut them down as many entities have already done.  Thanks for your cooperation with this.

Finally, in my last update, I mentioned that you could request an absentee ballot to vote in the March 17 election.  When you complete the application, you should still use March 17 as the election date. Absentee ballots must be postmarked by April 27.  Limited in-person voting is available to individuals with disabilities, for more information or to obtain an absentee ballot application, you can visit the Delaware County Board of Election website at https://boardofelections.co.delaware.oh.us/ and print an application, or you can call them at 740.833.2080 and have one sent to you.

Have a great evening,

Angie Hamberg
