The History of Big Walnut Middle School

Big Walnut High School in 1991
Opened as Big Walnut High School: 1991
Reopened as Big Walnut Middle School: 2022

On September 17, 1991, the newly constructed Big Walnut High School opened its doors at 555 South Old 3C Highway. Built on a part of the original 50-acre property owned by Sunbury School, this site has always played a pivotal role in the Big Walnut community. The previous high school at 105 Baughman St. was repurposed as Big Walnut Junior High School.

The Transition to Big Walnut Middle School

In January 2022, after the completion of a new high school at 713 N. Miller Dr., all high school students in grades 9-12 moved to the new facility. The 555 South Old 3C Highway building was renovated and reopened in the 2022-2023 school year as Big Walnut Middle School, accommodating 7th and 8th graders.

Expansion and Grade Band Changes

By 2024, following a district-wide grade band realignment, Big Walnut Middle School expanded to welcome 6th graders, making it the home for grades 6-8. This change reflects the district’s ongoing efforts to provide students with an enriching and flexible learning environment while continuing to utilize historic facilities in new ways.
