The History of Hylen Souders Elementary School

Hylen Souders Elementary in 1991
Opened: September 9, 1974
On September 9, 1974, Hylen Souders Elementary School opened its doors, marking a significant development in the Big Walnut School District’s history. Situated on a 40-acre plot, this innovative facility was designed to accommodate up to 700 students in grades K-5. The school is named in honor of Hylen Souders, a former district superintendent, and it was officially dedicated on May 18, 1975.

A Modern, Cluster-Based Design
Hylen Souders Elementary was constructed with a cluster concept that struck a balance between the open-concept design of the Middle School on South Old 3C Highway and a more traditional classroom structure. The building consists of five clusters, each with four classrooms surrounding a shared teacher planning room. This design allows for flexible learning environments while maintaining some traditional classroom features.

To further reduce noise levels, the building included moveable partitions that could divide classrooms. Centralizing offices, restrooms, and the library created additional space between teaching areas. Although classrooms lack windows, glass doors throughout the building provide a sense of openness and light.

Overcoming Early Challenges
When Hylen Souders Elementary first opened, the school faced a few operational challenges. The **cafeteria, gymnasium, and heating system** were not yet ready for use, but under the leadership of Principal Mrs. Frances Mallow, the staff of 24 teachers, 6 cooks, 3 custodians, 2 teacher aides, and a secretary worked together to ensure a smooth opening. Despite the initial hurdles, the school quickly became a well-functioning educational facility.

The Gas Shortage of 1979
The national gas shortage of 1979 presented a unique challenge for the district. Since Hylen Souders Elementary used electric heat instead of gas, the school was repurposed to house all elementary students temporarily. During this time, students attended school on a half-day schedule, sharing desks to accommodate the increased number of students. The Community Library provided additional books to support the school's media center during this transition.

While the school occasionally had to close due to air conditioning failures, Hylen Souders Elementary has largely been a successful and resilient facility, serving generations of Big Walnut students.

The facility currently houses grades K-3. A combination gym and cafeteria complete the building's features, ensuring students ample space for academic and physical activities.
